Quick question, is it true that an attacker's siege damage output is divided up between your traps and your wall? 

For instance, If you had two accounts with the same stats (max wall hp and max traps amount) with the exception of trap defense, the one with more trap defense will receive less wall damage over time?

Please do not comment and say walls are crap and offer no insight, I am only trying to understand game mechanics.

Traps are used by the player defending their turf. They are a way to kill troops by setting off on them, without having to be trained or give an upkeep. Traps are usually not fully destroyed after one hit but are used up to defend you wall.

Siege Engine troops are aimed to take walls down and may be interfered with traps. These traps are damaged by the siege later on and once the wall is damaged fully in battle any remaining traps are safely stored, hence to be repaired or left.

Troops with trap defence have a higher chance of breaking these traps and not getting hurt by them unlike those without. This means if the two castles had the everything the same apart from one having trap def, the def castle when attacking the other will deal more damage to the players walls and take it down easily without loosing as many troops.

It all depends on whether you are attacking another player or defending against them.
